"Better Labels for Your Quilts"

By Jean M. Merrill

JEAN M. MERRILL - BIO

As a young girl growing up in North East Texas, my Mother and Grandmother laid the groundwork that has through the years encouraged me to pursue the art of sewing.  College clothing and textiles classes at Texas Tech added to this groundwork.

Computerized machines stand alone bobbin winders and specialty stores were yet to reach the market place.  My sewing progressed from basic clothing to cross stitch, crewel embroidery and needle point. After moving to Colorado in 1977, my interest turned in the direction of quilting.  My first quilt was made in 2003 and in 2005 I began to use a "long arm quilting machine."  Through the years, I have received numerous quilts (a couple over 100 years old), but none had labels to establish their history.  The lack of labels encouraged me to begin developing a labeling method to document each quilt's history so others may enjoy them.

I live in Evergreen, Colorado with my husband who devotes his retirement to teaching the art of fly fishing.  We have a grown son and daughter.
