" Silk Ribbon Embroidery" 
 Friday, January 23, 2009, 9:00 am - 12 noon
Class fees are $25 includes kit

 
Come and learn some of the basic stitches of an age-old Victorian technique of ribbon embroidery.  You will learn 12 of the stitches most often used in silk ribbon embroidery work and receive two patterns to hone your skills on a project.
               
A good class for a beginner sewer or an advanced stitcher -
all you need to know is how to hold a needle.  Come have fun and marvel at what you can do with silk ribbon embroidery.

Supplies needed:
6'' embroidery hoop
Thimble
Small scissors


"Hand Applique"

Have you always loved the look of traditional hand applique but thought that it was just too hard?  Whether you want to make an intricate Baltimore Album or a simple Sunbonnet Sue block - come learn the tricks of the trade on how to make smooth curved edges, sharp points, straight edges, and bias stems for your flowers.
           
A good class for a beginner, also a good refresher course for a seasoned quilter.  We will be making a Sunbonnet Sue block for the class demo, but you will receive a pattern for a flower block to do on your own to practice what you learned in the class. 
 
Supplies needed:

Mechanical pencil
Chalk pencil
Freezer paper
Fine-grit sandpaper
Paper cutting scissors
Fabric cutting scissors
Basting thread
Cotton sewing thread that
   match your applique
   fabrics
Pins
Seam ripper
Small scissors
Applique needles, size 9

"Hand Quilting"

Come learn how to achieve the art of find hand quilting.  We will cover the topics of choosing quilt design, sizing designs, marking your quilt top and then sandwiching the layers to begin the quilting process.  We will also cover the topics of quilting needles, quilt threads and quilt battings.

This is a very technical, information filled class - every student will learn something from this workshop.  Please bring a paper and pencil for note taking.

NOTE:  we do not spend the 3 hours just quilting.  You will learn information that will make you a better quilter by the tools that you use.

Supplies needed:

A 14" - 18" quilt hoop
2 - 24" squares of muslin fabric
1 - 24" square of quilt batting of your choice
Mechanical pencil
6" x 12" ruler
Package of betweens quilting needles
    (your choice of size)
Spool of hand quilting thread
Small pair of thread clipping scissors
Thimble of your choice


"Folded Dimensional Flowers"

Techniques learned in this workshop will be folded fabric flowers, along with flower arranging to make a dazzling three-dimensional effect in your quilt block.  These folded flowers are not limited to only quilts; try them in your home decor or on garments.

Block designs come from inspiration taken from the book "Fabled Flowers" by Kumiko Sudo.  If you have the book, please bring to the workshop, but the book is not a requirement for the workshop.

 Supplies needed:

Applique needles, size 9 or 10
Neutral color cotton sewing thread
Small scissors


        

Brenda Jeschke Biography

Brenda began quilting in 1982 and showing her quilts in competition since 1989.  She is a traditional quilt maker, a machine piecer, hand appliquer and hand quilter.  In 1998 she began judging quilt shows throughout Texas .  She began to lecture and teach at quilt guild meetings and workshops in 2001.

The Ziegler Museum in Jennings , Louisiana in 1996 exhibited one of her quilts.  Quilters' Newsletter Magazine May 2003 edition published her article pertaining to a binding technique she developed and uses on her own quilts.  Mastering the Art of McTavishing by Karen McTavish featured Brenda's Wedgewood Blue quilt in April 2005.  What an honor to have the only hand quilted "McTavishing" quilt in a book of machine quilted quilts.  Quilters' Newsletter Magazine has displayed several of her quilts. 

Brenda has won many awards on the local, regional and national level showing her quilts.  Her memberships include American Quilter's Society (AQS), the National Quilting Association (NQA), The Applique Society (TQS) and the Quilters' Guild of East Texas (QGET) of Tyler .

A small farm in Buffalo , Texas has been her home with her husband since 1984.  Her other hobbies include working in her large yard and garden in addition to the upkeep of the farm.  She enjoys doing any type of embroidery work such as cross-stitch, hardanger and silk ribbon. 

Brenda is just an ordinary girl who happens to love to make quilts and share her knowledge.

Lectures            

John & Betsy Streigler will be in Rooms 204 & 205 each day "lecturing" on their Private Collection of Quilts made by the quilt makers of the impoverished Gee's Bend , Alabama area.  Letters, photos, music and video are included in their presentations.
